CASE STUDY
CMDB Governance and Obsolescence Assessment
Executive Intelligence & Governance
The problem
-
Discovered asset data was inconsistent—manufacturer and model information did not support reliable reporting or lifecycle decisions.
-
End-of-sale and end-of-life status was not tracked systematically, leaving obsolescence risk invisible until it affected operations.
-
There was no sustained operating model for CMDB maintenance, cleansing, and governance after initial discovery.
The challenge
After assets were discovered on the network, the client still struggled to govern CMDB data and manage hardware obsolescence. Inconsistent records and missing lifecycle dates made it hard to plan replacements, justify spend, or reduce risk from unsupported equipment.
The solution
We cleansed and standardised discovered assets—aligning manufacturer and model identifiers—and applied known end-of-sale and end-of-life dates to support obsolescence tracking. We built ServiceNow reports and dashboards to highlight assets approaching or past end of life, and delivered training on CMDB CI governance so the team could maintain data quality over time.
The result
The organisation can now manage technology obsolescence proactively, with governed CMDB data and reporting that flags replacement needs before they impact reliability or security. Asset management moved from fragmented, manual tracking to a sustainable, automated routine embedded in ServiceNow.
